Recap and reflections of yesterday’s incident at Sehome

A Message from Principal Michelle Kuss-Cybula

Dear Sehome families,

I wanted to say thank you again for your patience yesterday while our school was in a lockout. This was a precautionary action taken due to the report of a concerning individual near campus. Police are continuing to investigate, but there was no immediate threat inside our school.

We take issues regarding student safety seriously, and with that, I wanted to share a few reflections from yesterday:

  • We followed our safety protocols, but there was some confusion with staff. Every situation is a good chance for us to practice and refine our procedures.
  • Our school was in a lockout yesterday, which is a different protocol than lockdown. You can see our response protocols explained here. Our new building enables us to secure the site much faster than our old campus.
  • We are open to feedback; please contact me with any thoughts, comments or concerns.
  • Our school administration works hard to get accurate information out as quickly as possible with staff, students and our families. Sehome and district staff emailed and texted families, posted information to the Sehome and district websites, and shared via district social media channels. You must opt-in to receive notifications by text. To verify your cell number is set up in our notification system, please log onto Skyward Family Access and go to “Skylert” on the left hand menu or click here for step-by-step instructions.

Thanks again for your help and patience and for reassuring your students that our number one priority is keeping them safe.

Michelle Kuss-Cybula
